Acoustic ceilings in hospitals: what NRC 0.90 changes

2026-11-06

A hard-surfaced hospital is loud by construction: vinyl floors, wipeable walls, and long corridors that carry sound from one end to the other. The ceiling is the only large surface left to absorb it.

What NRC measures, and what it does not

Noise Reduction Coefficient is a single number average of absorption across four frequencies. NRC 0.90 means the panel absorbs about ninety per cent of the sound energy that reaches it.

It says nothing about how well sound passes from one room to the next — that is a different property, and a ceiling alone will not fix a partition that stops short of the slab.

Where it earns its cost

Reception and waiting areas, where speech privacy matters and hard surfaces dominate; ward corridors, where night noise travels; and dining or day rooms in care buildings.

Our glass-fibre acoustic ceiling is tested at NRC ≥ 0.90 to EN ISO 354, with Class A fire to EN 13501-1. That is also the range carrying CE marking, SGS reports and Korean fire certification.

The moisture caveat

Acoustic absorption and moisture resistance pull against each other. Glass-fibre panels perform in conditioned interiors; in a wet room or a pool hall the specification should change product rather than hope.

If the area is humid but conditioned, ask for the panel's behaviour at high relative humidity and read the test conditions, not the marketing line.

FAQ

Is NRC 0.90 the maximum?

Practically, yes — values above 0.90 are possible but the gain is marginal and the panel becomes fragile.

Does the ceiling fix echo in a corridor?

It reduces it substantially if the ceiling area is large relative to the floor; a narrow corridor with a hard floor still needs treatment at the walls.

Do acoustic panels carry CE marking?

Our glass-fibre acoustic range does, with SGS and Korean fire certification. Other product ranges do not.
