Ceiling load and service access
2026-11-21
Ceilings are bought as a finish and fail as a structure. Both failures are decided in the specification, months before anyone sees a sag.
Load is a system property
Panel weight, grid section, hanger spacing and the services carried above all contribute. A supplier who quotes a panel weight without a grid and hanger schedule has given you half a system.
Our GRP panels are supplied with load data and a hanger spacing schedule; where sprinkler, duct or luminaire loads are added, the grid is upgraded rather than the panel.
Access is a maintenance decision
Every hospital ceiling is opened: valves, dampers, cables, filters. A panel that must be destroyed to gain access turns a five-minute task into a contractor visit.
Demountable panels on a concealed grid, with a lifting tool, are the difference — and the same detail lets a damaged panel be swapped without touching its neighbours.
Detailing that prevents failure
Perimeter: a ceiling must not be wedged against the wall; a movement joint at the perimeter absorbs slab deflection. Ask for it in the detail.
Suspension: hangers anchored into the slab, not into a services bracket; and no hanger carrying another trade's load. It happens more than anyone admits.
| Item | Requirement | Failure mode |
|---|---|---|
| Hanger spacing | To supplier's schedule | Sag between hangers |
| Perimeter | Movement joint | Cracking at wall |
| Access | Demountable panel + tool | Panels destroyed |
| Added loads | Upgraded grid | Grid distortion |
| Panel weight | Stated per m² | Under-specified grid |
FAQ
Who designs the grid?
The ceiling supplier should issue a layout and hanger schedule for the project; the contractor installs to it.
Can I add a luminaire later?
Yes, if the grid was specified with reserve capacity — ask for the reserve load at design stage.
Is GRP heavy?
Heavier than a thin aluminium tile, which is why the hanger schedule matters; the data is supplied with the panel.
Send the reflected ceiling plan and we will return a hanger schedule
With reserve load for what gets added later.
