How to specify a cleanroom wall panel
2026-10-22
Most cleanroom wall submittals arrive as a brochure with the word hygienic printed on it. A consultant cannot approve that, and a contractor cannot build from it. Four numbers do the work instead.
One: the fire classification string, not the standard
A document that says tested to EN 13501-1 is incomplete. The classification string is the result: A2-S2,d0,t0 means limited combustibility, limited smoke, no burning droplets. The same standard also produces D-s2,d0 panels.
Ask for the classification report in the project name, and read the string on it.
Two: surface gloss, because glare is a clinical issue
In an operating theatre or an ICU, a glossy wall bounces the surgical light back at the team. A low-gloss surface is not cosmetic — it is fatigue management.
Our medical clean panel runs at a matt finish, measured at roughly 43% lower gloss than the standard specification, which is what removes the hot spot above a bed.
Three: joint width and how it is sealed
A flush panel with a 6 mm open joint is a ledge for dust. Ask for the joint detail in section, and ask what happens at the internal corner, where cleaning actually fails.
Dry-fixed systems should give a sealed, cleanable joint without site silicone, because silicone in a clinical area is a maintenance item that gets missed.
Four: what is inside the wall
A services cavity is the difference between a wall that accepts a socket later and a wall that gets cut open. Ask for cavity depth, and for the panel module that lets a single panel be removed for access.
We build the cavity into the panel, sized for conduit and small ductwork, with panels demountable on a concealed fixing.
| Property | Medical clean panel | Tiles and paint | FRP panel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fire classification | Class A | Depends on substrate | Varies |
| Surface | Matt, low glare | Grout lines | Gloss, gelcoat |
| Joint | Sealed, flush | Grout, porous | Sealed or open |
| Services cavity | Built in | None | Rarely |
| Demountable | Yes | No | Sometimes |
FAQ
Does the clean wall panel carry CE marking?
No. CE marking, SGS reports and Korean fire certification apply to our glass-fibre acoustic ceiling range only. The medical clean panel is supplied with fire and surface test reports.
Can it be installed over an existing wall?
Yes — the dry-fixed system is fixed to a levelled substrate, which is why it suits refurbishment of an occupied building.
What about cleanability testing?
Ask any supplier for the specific test method used. A claim of antibacterial without a named standard and named organisms should be treated as marketing.
